To increase group comfort and cohesion, the facilitator and assistant were women of the same race as focus group participants; the same facilitator-assistant pair led all three sessions for their race-gender group. At the same time, important differences surfaced between the two groups, many of which could be tied back to divergent histories of labor force participation, expectations as working mothers, and racial-gender group stereotypes. Such men, while they might protect their partners from other men, also present the risk of turning their aggression onto their partners.
